We all know that the journey of creating music can be a wild ride, full of ups and downs. Sometimes, the ideas flow like there's no tomorrow and other times it feels like you're stuck in a creative desert. That's where mindfulness comes in!

What’s mindfulness all about?

Mindfulness is all about being in the moment, fully present, and soaking up everything around you without judgment. It’s like hitting the pause button on everything that's happening around you and just being. Not that easy in today's world.

How does mindfulness help songwriters

  1. Boosts Creativity: Mindfulness helps you get into that magical flow state where ideas just pop up out of nowhere. By quieting the noise in your head and emptying it from worry, you open up space for new musical ideas and creative thoughts.

  2. Sharpens Focus: Distractions are everywhere, whether that's a notification popping up on our phone or feeling that sudden hunger creeping in! Practicing mindfulness can help you zero in on your writing and make those sessions more productive and fulfilling.

  3. Reduces Stress: Working in music can sometimes feel like a pressure cooker. As an industry it can require us to juggle many things at once and can be quite unforgiving. Mindfulness gives you the tools to handle that stress and anxiety, so you can bring yourself to slow down and approach your craft with a cool, more calm mindset.

  4. Breaks Through Writer’s Block: When we get stuck in a rut, we often spiral and start doubting ourselves and our abilities, going down a very dark and very deep rabbit hole. Mindfulness encourages you to embrace the block without freaking out! It’s all about exploring new paths and accepting the creative process for what it is; an emotional rollercoaster!

Easy Mindfulness Practices for Songwriters

  1. Meditate a Little: Spend a few minutes each day just focusing on your breath. Let go of those pesky thoughts and make room for fresh ideas.

  2. Listen To Music Attentively: Dive into some tunes and really listen. Start with an album that you love, or get your friends to recommend you some new music. Notice the lyrics, the beats, the chord progressions, the emotions. It’s a great way to spark new ideas and learn.

  3. Journal Your Heart Out!: Keep a journal and write down whatever comes to mind. No judgment, just free-flowing thoughts. Remember, journaling cannot be done wrong, so set no restrictions! You might just stumble upon some brilliant song ideas!

  4. Take Nature Breaks: This is a big one. You will never feel more present than when you are among the beauty and serenity of nature. Head outside and soak up some fresh air, beautiful sceneries and enjoy the quietness. The sights and sounds of nature can be a goldmine of inspiration and a great way to recharge those creative batteries.

  5. Breathe Deeply: Breathing is something most of us never think about. In fact, once you start thinking about the motion of breathing it starts to feel a bit odd. However, focusing on your breath for a few minutes a day can work wonders for your mind. It’s perfect for getting into the zone before a writing session or performance.
